In the third and final part of this audio presentation, Gary raises the point about progressing through what we call ’stages of development’, and how weighty Shadow Baggage can make this difficult, or less likely.

To give an idea, we might see (vertical) development on a particular ‘line’, such as the line of care, in which a human being may progress through Egocentric (care for oneself) and Ethnocentric (care for oneself and one’s family, tribe or nation) levels, and potentially on to Worldcentric (care for all human beings) or even Kosmocentric levels.

Worldviews are another way (or line) of identifying such vertical growth; another good example might be to reach an ‘Ego-aware’ stage in which we are able to see our minds and bodies as objects that we are aware of, rather than identifying directly with them.  Not to say that they’re not there, but that we can become aware of that part of ourselves that is aware of them, rather than thinking we are only them.

Vertical development is all about the ability to take ever-deeper Perspectives.

“Who would you rather have making decisions that affect you, someone who is egocentric or someone who is worldcentric?” – Ken Wilber

It is worth noting, though, that illuminating any Shadow Baggage is also a worthy and rewarding exercise in itself.  It just happens also to make any vertical growth or development more likely/possible.
